Syntroφ

We look for new ways to live together and make art. We start with how we work together.

We are artists and cultural managers with different working lives. At Syntroφ we come together to try out other ways of making a living, living together and sustaining one another.

What brings us together

Decisions shape a work before it even begins. Who can give it time? Who puts up the money? Who gets to decide? We want to find out what changes when we make those decisions together.

What draws us to syntropy is what comes into being when the parts come together. From φ, the Greek letter phi, we take the golden ratio, a harmony between the parts and the whole.

Someone brings an image. Someone else, a sound. We look for the point where what we hear changes what we see. That’s where a work begins that none of us brought along.

We work across painting, sculpture, moving image, sound, interactive systems and immersion. Each project retains its own team, authorship and credits.

Beyond painting, digital ecosystems

Two 2 × 3 metre oil paintings by Felipe Giuliano expand through projection and augmented reality. With a Meta Quest 3 headset, visitors explore the digital ecosystem that grows out of the canvas, accompanied by Thilo Schaller’s music in the gallery.

As you turn, a tree trunk crosses the outline of a red car. Beyond it, the window of the room is still visible. Where you stand becomes part of the composition.

Research through art

Each work gives us a chance to try a way of organising ourselves. The questions come back when the work is over and life goes on.

What do we live on while we create?

How do we share the work and the decisions?

How do we support one another when a work is finished?

El Poblao

El Poblao is a centre for making art in the midst of nature. Sometimes a work begins on a walk and takes shape on our return, as we tell someone else what we saw.
